Indulging in the Classic Dessert is Easy As...

*Not to be confused with Pi Day

No matter how you slice it, a pie is a glorious thing. You may be surprised to learn that the first pies are thought to be made by early Romans, who might have gotten the idea from the Greeks, according to the American Pie Council. As for National Pie Day, it is believed to be started by Charlie Papazian, a teacher from Boulder, Colorado, who declared the day on his birthday in the mid-1970s.

Here are Austin’s best places to pick up what is considered by many to be the most traditional American dessert.

Join Texas Farmers’ Market at Mueller to celebrate the sweet treat with vendor Elly’s Sweet Shop. A pie-eating contest will be held for the first seven people to sign up, a pie walk and a pie in the face game.

TFM at Mueller 4550 Mueller Blvd. Get pied from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Buy a pie, give a meal! Summermoon’s Westlake and Cedar Valley locations will be supporting Hungry Souls of Austin this pie day. Each purchase of Royers Pie Haven pies will feed kids in Austin over weekends and school breaks. Order by the slice or whole and try their wood fire coffee to go with it.

Summer Moon Coffee Bar 3115 S. First St., Ste. 1B and 3201 Bee Caves Road Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This musical, brought to life by an all-female creative team, tells the story of Jenna, a pie-maker, mother-to-be, and victim of an abusive marriage. She uses her pies not only as way to cope, but a way to forge the life she always wanted. “My mama used to say that you can live to be 100 if you give up all the things that make you wanna live to be 100,” Jenna says, encouraging us to never skip out on dessert. Amen to that!

Bass Concert Hall 2350 Robert Dedman Drive Curtain goes up at 8 p.m.

Tiny Pies' tiny pies pack big flavor. Most tiny pies are under $5, and a vegan pie is always on rotation. (Score!) Current flavors include: apple, cherry, key lime, Sweet Texas Pecan, Texas Two Step, coconut cream, chocolate cream, and various savory pies.

Start your morning right with Quack’s full service espresso cafe and scratch bakery. Good news for the night owls: They’re open till 11 p.m., so if you decide to end your day there with a slice of their pie instead of start your day, we don’t blame you.

A bakeshop that serves mini pies with mega sweetness, Sugar Mama’s mission is to deliver the freshest, most delicious baked goods around town. They say that they’re “keeping Austin sweet,” and after one bite of their Grapefruit Meringue pie, we agree.
